How to Customize Folders

This guide explains all the ways you can personalize and visually organize your folders in Kitchen.

Written by Denitsa Zhelyazkova

Folders in Kitchen can be fully customized to match your workflow and visual preferences.

Note: Folder customization options become available after you've added your first file or resource to the folder. Until then, only the Create and Upload or Drag buttons are displayed.

Once your folder contains at least one item, you'll see the customization controls in the top-left corner of the page, including the folder icon, title, favorite button, view options, search bar, and sorting menu. Below, you will find everything that you can adjust.

Customize Your Folder Icon

You can easily change your folder icon to make it more recognizable.

Option 1:

  1. Open your folder

  2. Click on the folder icon on the left of the title.

From here, you can:

  • Choose from existing icons

  • Change the icon color

  • Use an emoji

  • Upload your own image

  • Add an image from a URL

  • Paste an image directly using Ctrl/Cmd + V

👉 Small square images work best for icons.

Option 2:

Another way to update the icon is from the sidebar.

  1. Hover over the folder name.

  2. Click the three dots menu.

  3. Select Customize Icon.

Add a Cover Image

Cover images help you visually personalize your folder. To add or change a cover:

  1. Open the folder

  2. Click the Cover button (next to the folder title)

You can then:

  • Choose from pre-existing images

  • Search photos from Unsplash

  • Upload your own image

  • Add an image from a URL

  • Select the color option to use a solid background

  • Choose a size: none, smaller, or larger

Adjust Cover Size and Position

You can control how your cover looks:

  • Drag the bottom edge of the cover to adjust its height

  • Hover over the cover and click the small icon in the bottom-right corner

  • Drag to reposition the image

  • Click Save when you’re done

Rename a Folder

To rename your folder:

  1. Click directly on the folder title

  2. Edit the name

  3. Press Enter or click outside to save

Option 2:

  1. Open the folder

  2. Click the More options (three-dot) button in the top-right corner

  3. Select Rename

Add or Edit Description

You can add more context to your folder using a description.

To do that, click the description icon (third icon on the right of the folder title).

Alternatively, you can edit both the folder name and description from the Edit window.

Option 1:

  1. Go to the sidebar

  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the folder

  3. Select Edit

Option 2:

  1. Open the folder

  2. Click the More options (three-dot) button in the top-right corner

  3. Select Edit

Change Layout and Sorting

You can control how content inside the folder is displayed which gives you full control over how much information is visible. You can switch between Grid View and List View using the layout button in the top-right corner of the resources area.

Grid View

Grid View displays your resources as cards with previews.

At the top of the folder, you can:

  • Search resources by name using the search bar.

  • Filter resources by Author or Created.

To change how resources are sorted, click the Position dropdown above the resources. You can sort by:

  • Position

  • Name

  • Kind

  • Visibility

  • Author

  • Created

List View

List View displays your resources in a table with additional details. You can sort resources by clicking any column header, including:

  • Name

  • Kind

  • Visibility

  • Author

  • Created

At the top of the folder, you can:

  • Search resources by name.

  • Filter resources by Created.

To sort the resources, simply click any column header. An upward arrow means ascending order. Click the same header again to switch to descending order.

To customize which columns are displayed, click the More options (three-dot) menu in the top-right corner of the folder and select Toggle Header Columns.

From there, you can choose which columns to display by selecting or clearing the checkboxes for:

  • Kind

  • Visibility

  • Author

  • Created

This lets you customize the list view to show only the information you need. If you prefer a cleaner view, you can hide all optional columns and keep only the Name column visible.

You can also resize column widths by hovering between two column headers until the resize cursor appears, then clicking and dragging the separator.

Note: Layout and sorting settings are personal. This means:

  • Your clients will not see the folder layout and sorting options the same way you do

  • They can customize their own view independently
